Colombia is the world’s biggest supplier for high quality washed Arabica coffee.

The country is dominated by the three Cordilleras of the Andes, therefore there is a favourable topography for Arabica plants which need to be cultivated in the highlands.

Medellin Supremo grows in the Colombian department Antioquia. Here lies the biggest coffee area of the country. Medellin is the Capital of this department and many people consider coffee from this area to be the best coffee of Colombia.

Most of the coffee in Colombia is produced by small scale farmers on their fincas of an average size of 5 hectares where they cultivate coffee at an altitude of 1000 to 2000 meters above sea level.

Every step during the production from the harvest through the washing to the drying in the sun is carried out locally by the farmers and their families.

Nearly all of the coffee farmers are organised in Cooperatives which bring their products through the FNC (Federacion Nacional de Cafeteros) directly to the world market.

The label for „Cafe de Colombia“ is the triangle with Juan Valdez, the farmer who is transporting his fresh harvested coffee cherries with the aid of a donkey. This is indeed a scene which is usual and visitors can witness this very often. Since there are great altitude differences, the employment of machines is impossible and thus the good old donkey and horse do their work during the harvest.

Coffee is an essential element of the Colombian culture and the pride of the Colombians. No foreigner who is visiting a coffee finca leaves without drinking a cup of „Tinto“ then the host will ask: „Isn’t it right that the best coffee of the world comes from Colombia?”
